Classic Soft Sugar Cookies
Ingredients:
2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon baking powder
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 ½ cups white sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
¼ teaspoon salt
Optional: extra sugar for rolling
Instructions:
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Mix dry ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
Cream butter and sugar: In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar until smooth and fluffy.
Add egg and vanilla: Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until fully combined.
Combine wet and dry: Gradually mix in the flour mixture until a soft dough forms.
Shape cookies: Roll dough into 1-inch balls and optionally roll them in extra sugar. Place on prepared baking sheet about 2 inches apart.
Bake: 8–10 minutes, until edges are lightly golden but centers are still soft. Do not overbake—they stay soft as they cool.
Cool: Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for 2–3 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
These cookies are soft, buttery, and perfectly sweet—no wonder they’ve been loved for 50 years combined between you and your mom
