🍎 Grandma’s Apple Strudel
🧾 Ingredients
For the dough:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 tbsp sugar
2 tbsp vegetable oil or melted butter
3/4 cup warm water
For the filling:
5–6 apples (peeled, cored, thinly sliced)
1/2 cup sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg (optional)
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tbsp lemon juice
1/2 cup raisins (optional)
1/2 cup breadcrumbs
1/4 cup melted butter
For finishing:
2–3 tbsp melted butter (for brushing)
Powdered sugar (for dusting)
👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Make the dough
Mix flour, salt, and sugar in a bowl.
Add oil and warm water, then knead until smooth and elastic (about 8–10 minutes).
Form into a ball, lightly oil it, cover, and let rest for at least 1 hour (this helps it stretch easily).
  2. Prepare the filling
In a large bowl, combine apples, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, lemon juice, and raisins.
In a pan, lightly toast breadcrumbs in a bit of butter until golden.
  3. Stretch the dough
Place a clean cloth or towel on your table and dust with flour.
Roll out the dough, then gently stretch it with your hands until very thin (almost see-through).
    Trim thick edges if needed.
  4. Assemble the strudel
Brush the dough with melted butter.
Sprinkle toasted breadcrumbs evenly over the surface.
Spread the apple filling along one side.
Using the cloth, carefully roll the dough into a log.
  5. Bake
Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
    Brush with melted butter.
Bake at 180°C (350°F) for 35–45 minutes, until golden brown.
  6. Serve
Let cool slightly, then dust with powdered sugar.
    Slice and enjoy warm!
    💡 Tips (Grandma-style secrets)
Stretch the dough thin enough to read a newspaper through it—that’s the key to authentic strudel.
Don’t skip breadcrumbs—they absorb juice and keep the pastry crisp.
Best served with vanilla sauce, whipped cream, or even a scoop of ice cream.
