Here’s a cozy, classic Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy you can knock out on a weeknight 🍽️
Ingredients (Serves 4)
Patties
1 lb (450 g) ground beef
1/3 cup breadcrumbs (or crushed crackers)
1 egg
1 tbsp ketchup
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp onion powder
Salt & pepper
Onion Gravy
1 large onion, thinly sliced
2 tbsp butter or oil
2 tbsp flour
2 cups beef broth
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
Salt & pepper
Optional: splash of milk/cream for extra richness
How to Make It
Mix the patties
In a bowl, combine all patty ingredients. Gently mix (don’t overwork), then shape into 4 oval patties.
Sear the patties
Heat a skillet over medium-high with a little oil. Sear patties 3–4 min per side until nicely browned. Remove to a plate (they’ll finish cooking in the gravy).
Caramelize the onions
In the same skillet, add butter/oil and onions. Cook 6–8 minutes, stirring, until soft and golden. Season lightly with salt.
Build the gravy
Sprinkle flour over onions and stir 1 minute. Slowly whisk in beef broth. Add Worcestershire. Simmer until thickened, 2–3 minutes. (Add a splash of milk/cream if you like it creamier.)
Finish
Nestle patties back into the gravy. Simmer 5–7 minutes, until cooked through and tender. Taste and adjust seasoning.
Serve With
Mashed potatoes (classic move)
Buttered noodles or rice
Green beans or peas for some green
Quick Upgrades (Optional)
Mushroom lover: Add sliced mushrooms with the onions.
Extra savory: Stir in 1/2 tsp Dijon mustard to the gravy.
Juicier patties: Add 1–2 tbsp milk to the patty mix.
