Smothered Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy
Serves: 4
Time: ~35 minutes
Ingredients
Patties
1 lb (450 g) ground beef (80/20 is best)
1/3 cup breadcrumbs (or crushed crackers)
1 egg
2 tbsp milk
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp onion powder
Salt & pepper
Gravy
2 tbsp butter or oil
1 medium onion, sliced
2 tbsp flour
1½ cups beef broth
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
Salt & pepper
Optional: splash of cream or milk (for extra richness)
Instructions
Make the patties
In a bowl, mix beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
Form into 4 oval or round patties.
Sear the patties
Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.
Sear patties 3–4 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside (they’ll finish cooking in the gravy).
Cook the onions
In the same pan, add butter and sliced onions.
Cook 5–7 minutes until soft and lightly golden.
Make the gravy
Sprinkle flour over onions. Stir for 1 minute.
Slowly pour in beef broth while stirring.
Add Worcestershire, salt, and pepper. Simmer until thick.
Smother & simmer
Return patties to the pan. Spoon gravy over them.
Cover and simmer on low 8–10 minutes, until patties are cooked through.
Serve hot
Spoon extra gravy over the top and garnish with parsley if you want that photo-ready look 🌿
Best Sides (trust me on these)
Mashed potatoes
White rice
Egg noodles
Green beans or peas
Pro Tips
Want extra tender patties? Add 1 tbsp mayo to the meat mix.
Want mushroom gravy? Toss in sliced mushrooms with the onions.
Want Southern vibes? Use half beef broth, half milk for creamier gravy.
