“Michigan Rocks” Fried Dough Recipe
These are old-fashioned fried dough nuggets with a crisp outside and soft, chewy inside — simple, comforting, and perfect with powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar.
Ingredients
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons butter, melted
3/4 cup milk
Oil for frying
Optional toppings:
Powdered sugar
Cinnamon sugar
Honey or maple syrup
Instructions
Make the dough
In a bowl, mix flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Stir in melted butter and milk until a soft dough forms.
Shape the “rocks”
Pinch off small rough pieces of dough or roll into uneven little balls. They’re supposed to look rustic.
Heat the oil
Heat about 2 inches of oil in a deep pan to around 350°F (175°C).
Fry
Drop dough pieces into hot oil in batches. Fry 2–3 minutes per side until deep golden brown.
Drain & serve
Remove to paper towels. Dust with powdered sugar or toss in cinnamon sugar while warm.
Tips
Don’t overcrowd the pan or they won’t crisp properly.
For softer centers, keep the pieces slightly larger.
Great served warm with coffee or hot chocolate.
