🧈 Grandma Susie’s “Liquid Gold” Caramel Sauce
🥄 Ingredients
1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
6 tbsp (85g) unsalted butter (cut into pieces)
1/2 cup (120 ml) heavy cream
1 tsp vanilla extract
Pinch of salt (optional, for salted caramel)
👩🍳 Instructions
Melt the sugar
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, add the sugar.
Stir constantly with a heatproof spatula or wooden spoon.
It will clump, then melt into a thick amber liquid.
Add butter (carefully!)
Once fully melted, add the butter.
It will bubble a lot — keep stirring until smooth.
Pour in cream
Slowly drizzle in the cream while stirring.
The mixture will bubble again — that’s normal.
Finish it
Let it boil gently for 1 minute, then remove from heat.
Stir in vanilla and salt (if using).
Cool slightly
It thickens as it cools into that “liquid gold” texture.
✨ Tips
Don’t walk away — sugar can burn quickly.
If it seizes up, keep stirring on low heat — it will smooth out.
Store in a jar in the fridge for up to 2 weeks (reheat to use).
🍰 How to use it
Drizzle over pancakes, cakes, or ice cream
Dip apples or bread
Swirl into coffee or milk
