🛒 Ingredients (2–3 sandwiches)
For the patties:
400–450g ground beef (80/20 for best flavor)
Salt & black pepper
½ tsp garlic powder (optional)
For the onions:
2 large onions (thinly sliced)
1 tbsp butter
1 tsp sugar (optional, helps caramelize)
Pinch of salt
For the sandwich:
6 slices rye bread (or any sturdy bread)
4–6 slices Swiss cheese (or cheddar)
2–3 tbsp butter (for toasting)
Optional sauce (HIGHLY recommended):
3 tbsp mayonnaise
1 tbsp ketchup
1 tsp mustard
1 tsp pickle relish (optional)
👨‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Caramelize the onions
    Heat butter in a pan over medium-low heat
    Add onions + pinch of salt
    Cook slowly (15–20 mins), stirring often
    Add sugar halfway through for extra sweetness
    Cook until deep golden and jammy → set aside
  2. Make the patties
    Divide beef into thin, slightly larger-than-bread patties
    Season with salt, pepper, garlic powder
    Cook in a hot pan (or skillet) 2–3 mins per side
    Don’t overcook—they’ll finish in the sandwich
  3. Make the sauce
    Mix mayo, ketchup, mustard, relish
    Taste and adjust (more tangy or creamy if you like)
  4. Assemble
    Butter one side of each bread slice
    On the non-buttered side:
    Spread sauce
    Add cheese
    Add beef patty
    Add caramelized onions
    Add more cheese (yes, more 😄)
    Top with bread (buttered side out)
  5. Grill to perfection
    Cook on medium heat in a skillet
    Press gently with a spatula
    Cook 3–4 mins per side until:
