Sweet Onion Depression-Era Sauce Recipe
Ingredients
4 large onions, thinly sliced
3 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon flour
1 cup beef broth (or chicken broth)
1/2 cup milk or heavy cream
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
Salt and black pepper, to taste
Fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
Heat butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
Add the sliced onions and cook slowly, stirring often, for 20–25 minutes until they become soft, golden, and sweet.
Sprinkle in the brown sugar and flour. Stir well and cook for 2 minutes.
Slowly pour in the broth while stirring so the sauce stays smooth.
Add milk (or cream), Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
Simmer for 5–7 minutes until the sauce thickens and becomes rich and silky.
Serve over mashed potatoes, pork chops, chicken, steak, rice, or even toasted bread.
This simple old-fashioned recipe turns basic onions into pure comfort food.
