Iowa-Style Sweet Rolls
Ingredients:
1 cup warm milk (110°F / 45°C)
1/2 cup sugar
1/3 cup butter, melted
2 teaspoons active dry yeast
1 teaspoon salt
2 eggs
4 cups all-purpose flour
For the glaze (optional):
1 cup powdered sugar
2 tablespoons milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions:
Activate Yeast: In a small bowl, mix the warm milk, yeast, and 1 teaspoon sugar. Let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.
Mix Dough: In a large bowl, combine the yeast mixture, melted butter, remaining sugar, eggs, and salt. Gradually add flour until a soft dough forms.
Knead: Turn onto a floured surface and knead 5–7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
First Rise: Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let rise 1–2 hours until doubled in size.
Shape Rolls: Punch down the dough and roll into 12–15 balls. Place in a greased baking pan.
Second Rise: Cover and let rise 30–45 minutes until puffy.
Bake: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake 15–20 minutes until golden brown.
Glaze (optional): Mix powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla. Drizzle over warm rolls.
These rolls are soft, sweet, and exactly the kind of treat you’d remember from family outings in Iowa. You can even tweak them with cinnamon, nuts, or a little jam in the center!
If you want, I can also give you a fried version—like the kind sold at Iowa fairs—that’s extra nostalgic and totally addictive.
Do you want me to do that?
