🍪 Michigan Rocks (Old-Fashioned Recipe)
🧾 Ingredients:
1 cup butter (softened)
1 ½ cups brown sugar
2 eggs
½ cup molasses
3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp ground cloves
½ tsp nutmeg
½ tsp salt
1 ½ cups raisins
½ cup chopped walnuts (optional)
1 cup hot water
👩🍳 Instructions:
Prep the raisins
Pour hot water over the raisins and let them sit for about 10 minutes to plump up. Drain well.
Cream butter & sugar
In a large bowl, beat butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
Add wet ingredients
Mix in eggs one at a time, then stir in the molasses.
Combine dry ingredients
In another bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and salt.
Mix together
Gradually add dry ingredients to the wet mixture. Stir until just combined.
Fold in raisins & nuts
Add the drained raisins and walnuts (if using).
Shape & bake
Drop spoonfuls of dough onto a greased or lined baking sheet (they should look rough and “rocky”).
Bake
Bake at 180°C (350°F) for 10–12 minutes, until set and lightly browned.
Cool
Let cool on a rack—they’ll firm up slightly but stay soft inside.
✨ Optional Glaze (like some moms made):
1 cup powdered sugar
2–3 tbsp milk
Splash of vanilla
Mix and drizzle over cooled cookies.
