Homemade Rustic Bread Loaf
Ingredients
3 cups all-purpose flour or bread flour
1½ teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon sugar or honey
2 teaspoons instant yeast
1¼ cups warm water
1 tablespoon olive oil
Instructions
Mix the dough
In a large bowl, combine flour, salt, sugar, and yeast. Add warm water and olive oil. Stir until a shaggy dough forms.
Knead
Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
First rise
Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a towel, and let rise for 1–2 hours until doubled in size.
Shape the loaf
Punch down the dough and shape into a round rustic loaf. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet or in a Dutch oven.
Second rise
Cover and let rise another 30–45 minutes.
Bake
Preheat oven to 220°C (425°F). Score the top with a sharp knife. Bake for 30–35 minutes until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.
Cool
Let cool for at least 20 minutes before slicing.
