🥐 Old-Fashioned Buttermilk Biscuits (Sunday Morning Style)
Ingredients
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tbsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
6 tbsp cold butter (very cold, cubed)
3/4 cup cold buttermilk (plus a little extra if needed)
Instructions
Preheat oven to 220°C (425°F). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Mix dry ingredients
In a bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
Cut in butter
Add cold butter cubes and mix with your fingers or a pastry cutter until it looks like coarse crumbs (some small butter chunks = flaky biscuits).
Add buttermilk
Pour in buttermilk and gently mix until dough just comes together. Don’t overmix.
Shape dough
Turn onto a floured surface, gently pat (don’t roll too hard) to about 2 cm thick.
Fold for layers (optional but amazing)
Fold dough over itself 2–3 times, then pat down again.
Cut biscuits
Use a round cutter or glass. Press straight down (don’t twist).
Bake
Place close together for soft sides or spaced apart for crispy edges. Bake 12–15 minutes until golden on top.
Finish
Brush with melted butter right after baking.
Serve with:
Honey or jam 🍯
Sausage gravy
Butter + syrup for a sweet version
