Grandpa’s 4-Ingredient Spring Staple
This sounds like a simple old-fashioned cabbage and potato skillet — inexpensive, filling, and made from pantry basics many families relied on during hard times.
Ingredients
1 small head cabbage, chopped
3–4 potatoes, peeled and diced
1 onion, sliced
2–3 tbsp butter or bacon grease
Salt & pepper to taste
Instructions
Cook the potatoes
Boil diced potatoes in salted water for about 10 minutes until just tender. Drain.
Sauté the onion
In a large skillet or Dutch oven, melt butter or bacon grease over medium heat. Add onions and cook until soft.
Add cabbage
Stir in chopped cabbage and cook 10–15 minutes until wilted and lightly caramelized.
Finish with potatoes
Add cooked potatoes to the skillet. Stir everything together and cook another 5–7 minutes until slightly crispy.
Season & serve
Add salt and plenty of black pepper. Serve hot.
