Sizzling Chinese Pepper Steak with Onions
Ingredients
500 g (1 lb) beef sirloin or flank steak, thinly sliced
2 bell peppers (green, red, or mixed), sliced
1 large onion, sliced
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 tbsp fresh ginger, grated
2 tbsp vegetable oil
Marinade
2 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp cornstarch
1 tsp sesame oil
1 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp black pepper
Sauce
1/4 cup soy sauce
1 tbsp oyster sauce
1 tbsp hoisin sauce (optional)
1 tbsp cornstarch
1/2 cup beef broth or water
1 tsp chili flakes or cracked black pepper
Instructions
Marinate the beef
In a bowl, mix the sliced beef with soy sauce, cornstarch, sesame oil, sugar, and black pepper. Let sit for 15–20 minutes.
Prepare the sauce
Whisk together soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, cornstarch, broth, and chili flakes.
Cook the beef
Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large skillet or wok over high heat. Sear the beef in batches for 2–3 minutes until browned. Remove and set aside.
Stir-fry vegetables
Add remaining oil. Cook onions, peppers, garlic, and ginger for 3–4 minutes until slightly tender but still crisp.
Combine everything
Return beef to the pan. Pour in the sauce and stir well. Cook another 2–3 minutes until glossy and thickened.
Serve hot
Best served sizzling over steamed rice or noodles.
