Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy
Ingredients
For the patties
500 g ground beef
1/2 cup breadcrumbs
1 egg
1 small onion, finely grated
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 tbsp ketchup
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp Dijon mustard (optional)
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
1/2 tsp paprika
1 tbsp oil for frying
For the onion gravy
2 large onions, thinly sliced
2 tbsp butter
2 tbsp flour
2 cups beef broth
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp soy sauce (optional)
1/2 tsp thyme
Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Make the patties
In a bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, grated onion, garlic, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, salt, pepper, and paprika.
Shape into 4–6 oval patties. - Brown the patties
Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat.
Cook patties for about 4–5 minutes per side until nicely browned.
Remove and set aside. - Cook the onions
In the same skillet, melt butter.
Add sliced onions and cook slowly for 10–15 minutes until soft, golden, and caramelized. - Make the gravy
Sprinkle flour over onions and stir for 1 minute.
Slowly pour in beef broth while stirring.
Add Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper.
Simmer until thickened. - Finish cooking
Return patties to the skillet.
Cover and simmer for 10–15 minutes until fully cooked and tender.
