Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy
Ingredients
For the Salisbury Steaks
1 lb (450 g) ground beef
1/3 cup breadcrumbs
1 egg
1 small onion, finely grated
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tbsp ketchup
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
1/2 tsp paprika
1 tbsp oil or butter for frying
For the Onion Gravy
1 large onion, thinly sliced
2 tbsp butter
2 tbsp flour
2 cups beef broth
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1/2 tsp thyme (optional)
Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions

  1. Make the Patties
    In a large bowl, mix:
    ground beef
    breadcrumbs
    egg
    grated onion
    garlic
    ketchup
    Worcestershire sauce
    salt, pepper, and paprika
    Form into 4 oval-shaped patties.
  2. Brown the Steaks
    Heat oil or butter in a skillet over medium heat.
    Cook patties for about 4–5 minutes per side until nicely browned. Remove and set aside.
  3. Cook the Onions
    In the same skillet, melt butter.
    Add sliced onions and cook slowly for 10–15 minutes until soft and golden.
  4. Make the Gravy
    Sprinkle flour over onions and stir for 1 minute.
    Slowly whisk in beef broth. Add Worcestershire sauce and thyme.
    Simmer until thickened, about 3–5 minutes.
  5. Finish
    Return patties to the skillet.
    Spoon gravy over them, cover, and simmer for 10 minutes until fully cooked and tender.
    Serve With
    Mashed potatoes
    Rice
    Buttered noodles
    Steamed vegetables
